Italian Dual Citizenship in Michigan
Italian citizenship may seem something unachievable for most U.S. citizens, given the country is so far away and often so are the connections, but it’s a more realistic dream than many might guess. There are plenty of Michigan residents eligible for Italian citizenship—they just don’t know it yet.
Italy’s generous citizenship laws and application process mean that Michigan residents have successfully gone through the steps and been granted the right to live and work in this beautiful European country through Italian dual citizenship assistance. Here’s what you need to know about Italian dual citizenship in Michigan.
The Benefits of Italian Citizenship
Even if you qualify for Italian dual citizenship in Michigan, you might be wary of the expenses and complexities of the Italian citizenship process. However, becoming an Italian citizen and gaining an Italian passport is worth it for many reasons, including:
- The right to work and live in any country in the E.U., including, of course, being able to reside in Italy
- Access to Italian education at a much lower cost
- Protection as an Italian citizen
- Voting opportunities
- Healthcare in Italy
- The ability to own property and become a permanent resident in the E.U.
The application process is a long one, but it comes with incredible benefits at the end of the journey.

Requirements for Italian Citizenship
There are a few different ways you can become an Italian citizen. These are the most common and the ones to look into.
Italian Citizenship by Descent
The most common way to get Italian dual citizenship in Michigan is Italian citizenship by descent, also known as right of blood. You might, for example, have a great grandfather or other Italian ancestor who is Italian, and he would be able to pass his citizenship to your family members—known as jure sanguinis.
Obtaining Italian citizenship by jure sanguinis involves research into your italian family history, genealogy, and gathering vital records to prove your connection to Italy through an Italian born ancestor. A genealogical expert or Italian citizenship service like ours can do this research and help gather important documents to make sure your case is granted.
Italian Citizenship by Marriage
Italian citizenship by marriage, otherwise known as jure matrimonii, is another common way that Michigan residents have gained Italian citizenship. If you marry an Italian citizen, after only three years you are eligible to apply for citizenship.
The time period is shortened to two years if you live in Italy, although there you will have to apply to the Italian prefettura rather than the Italian consulate.
The documents needed to apply for Italian citizenship are generally fewer. If you are a foreign woman who married an Italian man before April 27th, 1983, you can gain citizenship with only a marriage certificate, the appropriate translations, and apostilles (and your own vital records, such as a birth certificate). For marriages after 1983, automatic citizenship is not offered, but you can gain Italian Dual Citizenship by completing the Italian language certification test and providing your criminal records since the age of 18.
