How to Become an Italian Citizen
There are a few different ways you can become an Italian citizen, though some ways are more common than others. Here’s how you can go about it!
Italian Citizenship by Descent
The most common way to get Italian dual citizenship in Georgia is by Italian descent. Attaining citizenship via this method—otherwise known as jure sanguinis—is usually done by gathering the necessary documents to prove you have Italian ancestors, whether it’s a grandparent or someone much further back. You’ll then have to ensure the legitimacy of all documents before presenting them to the Italian consulate.
Due to the generous laws, this ancestor could be quite far back in your family tree and still give you the right to Italian citizenship.
Italian Citizenship by Marriage
Through marriage, otherwise known as jure matrimonii, is another way to gain Italian dual citizenship in Georgia. If you’ve been married to an Italian citizen for three or more years, or if you have been married with children for one and a half years, then you can apply to become an Italian citizen, too, regardless of if you’ve ever lived in Italy.
Naturalization
If you’ve lived in Italy for over ten years as an American citizen, you can apply for dual citizenship in Italy through naturalization. This time period is much shorter if you’re a citizen of another European Union country, at four years. If you still live in Italy, you will go through the courts rather than the U.S. Italian consulate location.
